Kapok Filling

Due to its special thermal properties and silky sheen, kapok is often referred to that silk cotton or vegetable cashmere. The natural wax coating of the fiber inhibits moisture absorption. While it is not possible to spin kapok fiber itself, it is possible to spin kapok blended with at least 50% cotton.

Kapok is ideal for use as a stuffing (toys, figures, pillows, etc.) or as sound insulation. Extremely water repellent, kapok fiber was historically used as filler in life jackets.

Kapok is produced as part of the seed pod of the world's largest tree species, Ceiba pentandra.  Native to W. Africa, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, kapok trees can grow to a height of 240 feet and a diameter of 10 feet.  The primary commercial sources of kapok are Thailand and Indonesia.
