Carding is the processing/brushing raw or washed fibers to prepare them as textiles. A large variety of fibers can be carded, anything from dog hair, to llama, to soy fiber to polyester. Cotton and wool are probably the most common fibers to be carded. Woolen (carded preparation) presents the fibers in a spiral fashion. This traps more air and makes a springier yarn which is more insulating, but not as long wearing (as worsted), and more apt to pill.
Combing produces a parallel presentation of fibers for worsted or semi-worsted yarns. These yarns are longer wearing, smoother, and less insulating than woolen yarns.
From fiber blending boards to hand carders, we have a wide range of products to choose from. View our selection today!
